Welcome to the Interkom Family

March 20th, 2012

The start of 2012 has brought many new clients to our growing Interkom family. After more than 3 decades in this business, I am pleased to report that it’s still a thrill to get to know these clients, earn their business and learn about their unique communication challenges and opportunities. Each new client is as rewarding as the last and they are all keeping me young at heart.

We would like to welcome the following organizations! Let the journey begin.

  • Bosch Rexroth Canada – Burlington
  • Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences – Hamilton
  • City of St. Catharines Performing Arts Centre
  • Heart House Hospice – Mississauga
  • Lansdowne Children’s Centre – Brantford
  • Toronto Hostels Training Centre – Toronto

We can't wait to see what the rest of 2012 has in store for Interkom.

Commuting in the Golden Horseshoe

January 30th, 2012

When I get into my car to drive to the Burlington Interkom office, I adjust the mirrors, lock in my seat belt, and set the radio dial to a news station with traffic reports. While this may seem a self-defeating exercise in futility,  I only have a few short blocks to drive, which takes about as long as it does for the announcers to list just a few of the traffic snarls, fender benders, rollovers, and bumper-to-bumper jams throughout the Golden Horseshoe region.

Be the change! Canada’s dominant clean transportation industry association – Electric Mobility Canada – is asking fellow Canadians to step up and test out alternative methods of transportation. The conversation surrounding electric mobility has been going on for several years, slowly gaining momentum in Canada with the forming of EMC in November 2006.

The not-for-profit organization provides national membership to companies offering electric vehicle technologies and products. Over the years, their membership list has grown tremendously to more than 180 members, including Hydro-Quebec, BC Hydro, Nissan, Ford, General Motors, Canada Post, Purolator, General Electric, university research centres and much more!

EMC is dedicated to building an electric future, gaining strong government support and business networking opportunities. In order to do this, they have spanned their membership across various industries, energy providers, end users, non-government organizations and government agencies in strengthening their effect to drive Canada’s electric transportation industry to new realms of technology and change. Be the change, join EMC!

Economic Development & Tourism Success or Just a Hassle?

August 29th, 2011

Does music bring Chicago together? Or does it tear them apart? Depends on how you see it.

Everyone experiences music differently. That includes their feelings towards a gigantic music festival that sprawls over 115 acres of land, drawing in an estimated 270,000 people over a 3-day period.

Visiting Chicago and attending this year’s Lollapalooza music festival to celebrate our love of music was an indescribable experience. The massive crowds, loud music, screaming fans and endless amounts of greasy food made the experience unforgettable. But that reflects the view of an out-of-towner who expected to roam Chicago’s streets with no hesitation while Coldplay blares in the background. What about the local residents who must deal with excessive crowds, closed streets, increased traffic and obnoxious tourists?

The Lost Arts

July 7th, 2011

Being surrounded by technology 24/7, it appears that this trend is with us to stay. While 95% of my work these days revolves around a computer, every now and then I long for the days when things were still done by hand.
Back in high school I was a visual arts major, so my curriculum revolved around sketching, painting and sculpting. I had all the tools at my disposal, including paintbrushes, HB pencils and canvases. Surprisingly, the only thing I never touched was a mouse.

Coming from a fine arts background, I was thrown into the world of graphic design during university. To my horror our classrooms were comprised solely of computers. I was even more shocked learning that some of my classmates couldn’t even draw using conventional things like pen and paper. Illustrator and anything ‘vector’ seemed to be the trend back in the day.

During my first year everyday was a struggle to get through. It was hard learning all the programs that other people seemed to have an advantage over. I always thought my skills in fine arts would be beneficial in a design environment, but that was obviously not the case.

However, over time I began to learn the conveniences using the computer. Certainly it doesn’t take over the essential skills like knowing how to sketch out a concept, but it does allows you to manipulate things faster and more efficiently than what can be done by hand. It’s also great because you can save multiple versions of your files and share it with others working on the same project. It definitely has a universal appeal when you move across different platforms.

While I no longer harbour any ill-feelings towards the computer, I still relish in any opportunities I have to do things by hand. One lesson I have learned being in a design environment is that it takes your own initiative to find the things that balances out your skills and interests. Don’t ever forget the foundation you’ve built for yourself.

The 5 Keys to Success

June 16th, 2011

As summer is fast approaching, June seems to be the month to celebrate our local entrepreneurial sprit. Burlington’s entrepreneurial spirit is more vibrant than ever as we celebrated the success of our local economy at last week’s 2011 BEDC Signature Event.

Burlington’s Annual Entrepreneur of the Year award is awarded to an individual who exemplifies incredible leadership, philanthropy and who has strengthened the Burlington Community. This year’s Hall of Fame Inductee was Ron Foxcroft, Chairman, Founder and CEO of the Foxcroft Group of Companies, Fluke Transportation, Fox 40 International and Foxcroft Capital Corporation.
